After The Big Push

£0.49

This year it is the hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War. Many recent documentaries on radio and television have given vent to modern academic reinterpretations of the Great War away from the traditional approach of seeing the war as a barbaric waste of human life. This traditional view has been immortalised in popular culture through the lens of ‘Black Adder’ or Sting’s ‘Children’s Crusade’. I however am not ready to be sympathetic to the establishment of the time and I cannot get away from the fact that the early years of the war were characterised by poor decision making by politicians and generals alike and the pervading view that an army of lower class ‘Tommies’ could be thrown at the guns willy-nilly with no recourse to reason or criticism. This is my own rendition of the horrors of war.

“I’m glad you did this. This is a truly visceral read and I loved your word choices whose very sounds were harsh and unyielding. I was particularly impressed with your iambic rhythm.”
Halley Cohen, Exeter Writings’ Group.

The dripping scythe, a reaper’s dawn
draws taunting flies to putrid flesh.
Pale bodies rent with leaden scowls,
long masking shrieks in silent eyes.
