Alec lent against the trig point by the cliff-top path high above the roar of the waves. His eyes stung from the salty wind driving in from the Atlantic. At this time of year and on a day like this, the meandering path between the gorse and the heather was deserted.
Now he knew why Graham had insisted on getting away for the weekend.
He could sense Graham watching him from the cottage three hundred yards away, but Alec didn’t dare return his stare. He couldn’t, not until he’d thought it through thoroughly. He zipped up his jacket against the squall and stepped purposefully towards the slippery track that led down to the sea, its bitter-sweet smell compelling him ever downwards.
Alec passed the rocky outcrops that they had surveyed together as students twenty-five years earlier. They had spent a summer dragging-out the mapping of the Precambrian anticline for longer than was absolutely necessary so that they could enjoy the sunshine and hang out with the girls on the west beach who clustered around the fires at evenings reveries. Alec had fallen for suntanned, long-legged, blond-haired, high-cheek boned and utterly captivating Fran. She wore flowing skirts with loose chemises and her fair ringlets cascaded over her breasts like a Valkyrie. Events had conspired against Alec and what had been intended as a summer dalliance ended up being very much more serious, not for Alec, but for Graham who had stolen Fran away from him. Alec soon found solace with Fran’s friend Melissa and the four of them enjoyed the rest of the long hot summer harmoniously. Alec and Melissa’s relationship never even lasted until Christmas, but Fran and Graham’s blossomed. After University, they lived together in Venezuela where Graham had been posted with the Oil Company he worked for. A few years later, they returned to London and got married. Alec was the best man. Fran and Graham had had three sons, little blond Vikings and Alec was godfather to them all: Max, Finn and Joe.
Oh Christ! What would he say to Fran and the boys?
