Henry Bowen sat expectantly on the consulting couch swinging his legs like a child waiting to be chastised.
“I warned you, didn’t I? You have fallen into a significant risk category called metabolic syndrome consisting of a number of factors that would suggest susceptibility towards cardiovascular disease; these are hyper tension, high blood cholesterol, sleep apnea and above average triglyceride levels combined with hyperlipidemia. Furthermore, your prthrombotic state accelerates cardiovascular risk.”
That’s easy for you to say, doctor! thought Henry. Then he wondered if the doctor had actually called him, euphemistically, a fat drunken slob: a fatso.
The doctor shook his head, sighed and began scribbling furiously on his prescription pad as though every second counted.

Henry’s taxi was held up in traffic on Waterloo bridge. The last time he had been home late his long-suffering wife had mislaid her sense of humour. By the time his train had arrived at its destination, it was passed eleven with no taxis available until gone midnight. He’d had to phone his wife, slurring his words. She had parked up, thrown open the car door and marched towards him. The kids were in their pyjamas in the back of the car. He thought how beautiful she was then with her close set blue-grey eyes flashing impulsively, her high cheekbones redolent of a Teutonic heroine and her russet hair shining under the streetlamps.
Stupidly, he had smiled. She scowled at him.
“Maria, I’m really sorry, I…” he’d hiccupped.

Arabella –
A hilarious novel about the struggles of dieting – this is a perfect holiday read. I burst out laughing several times and really enjoyed reading about the journey from Homer Simpson to Colin Firth, this is a feel good read for all. I would highly recommend this
