One Deadly Sin

£1.49

This short story deals with avarice – greed and ambition and the wanton abandonment of all decency to achieve fame and money. Ava is a young, seductive cellist who has found out that she has been shortlisted for the televised music competition called the Rubicon Prize along with four others. However, she is not interested in the musical credibility a win would bring – rather she is interested in the opportunity it affords her to be selected to front up the ‘hot’ classical-pop string quartet ‘Ladies Chamber’.

“You immediately grab the readers’ attention by plunging us into a situation with characters we know nothing about. You make use of short sentences which keep the pace nicely sharp and there is plenty of visual detail. The writing is well balanced and has a good rhythm. The writing is strong and I very much enjoyed the story.”
Winchester Writers’ 2013.

“You’re the last name on the list, Ava.” Jeannie shifted uncomfortably in her long black gown. The list was hidden underneath the stack of programmes she was handing out to the audience as they entered the auditorium.
“C’mon Jeannie, who are the others? Bet they haven’t got legs like mine,” Ava grinned coyly.
“I can’t show you. I’ve told you too much already!”
The ten minute bell rang out.
“When have I ever asked you for anything, didn’t I set you up with Stephen at the College?”
Ava was insistent. Her olive cheek bones rose with her beguiling smile. Her huge brown eyes shone out from under loose waves of dark hair.
Jeannie was compelled to yield to her.
“His name is Simon,” Jeannie conceded, thrusting the list into Ava’s grasping hand.

As the cognoscenti folded their picnic tables at the end of the interval, Ava returned to her car. She sat behind the wheel gripping the list tightly before eventually unfolding it. There were four names on the list for the coveted Rubicon Prize: the most prestigious of cello competitions.

Ava hoisted up her skirt, kicked off her heels and started the engine. The indignity of sleeping with a nobody at Rubicon to deduce that Jeannie was the competition administrator receded quickly. Driving back to London, she considered Rubicon’s other problem. The classical label, Rubicon, were looking for a replacement for Lucy Hemmings. The same gorgeous, brilliant Lucy Hemmings who was secretly pregnant and who would soon be unable to fulfil her commitments to the classical-pop quartet Ladies’ Chamber who were being lauded as ‘the next big thing’.
